AHAs in Skincare

Alpha Hydroxy Acids have transformed skincare as we know it today. AHAs main job is to dissolve the bonds binding dead skin cells to the skin’s surface to reveal new, radiant skin. AHAs are effectively a liquid exfoliant rather than a physical scrub. A liquid exfoliant sweeps away dead skin cells by penetrating the skin, whereas a physical exfoliant only works on the skin's surface.

Lucy Bee Exfoliating Tonic with AHA and PHA contains an ingredient called ACB Fruit Mix which contains natural AHAs.

What is ACB Fruit Mix

ACB Fruit Mix is made up of five plant species: Bilberry, Sugar Cane, Orange, Lemon and Sugar Maple. These botanical extracts deliver 5 natural AHAs to the skin: lactic acid (from Bilberry), glycolic acid (from sugar cane), citric acid (from orange and lemon) and malic and tartaric acid (from sugar maple).

What are AHAs used for in Skincare?

AHAs are commonly used to help to give a smoother, brighter complexion alongside a reduced appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Ultimately helping with a rejuvenated complexion. AHAs improve moisturisation and increase the production of collagen which helps with skin elasticity.

By removing the dead skin cells, it helps serums and moisturisers to be absorbed more easily.

  • Gentle chemical exfoliation
  • Increased rate of cellular renewal
  • Smoother and brighter appearance
  • Reduces the size of dead skin cells
  • Minimises the look of pores
  • Reduces oiliness
  • Gives a dazzling glow back to tired, dull-looking skin
  • Removes appearance of blemishes and visible redness

Lucy Bee Exfoliating Tonic with AHA & PHA

Lucy Bee ExfoliatingTonic with AHA & PHA is enriched with lactic acid – a natural derivative of orange and lemon. It is an effective moisturiser that is a known humectant which essentially means it helps to really improve the skin’s moisture and keep it hydrated. Various pieces of research conclude that lactic acid is the best exfoliating acid for all skin types, especially people who have sensitive skin.

PHAs work to improve skin tone and texture by removing the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin leaving your skin smoother and brighter. They also increase cell renewal.

Our formulation contains aloe vera which helps to soothe, cool and hydrate the skin – it’s also great for dealing with inflammation. The h yaluronic acid similarly helps with epidermal hydration.

If you’re apprehensive about putting something with the word ‘acid’ on your face then we hope this explains its use. We would suggest doing a patch test and slowly build up the usage of the tonic.

When using products like AHAs including our ExfoliatingTonic with AHA & PHA it is important to ensure that you wear SPF daily, including during winter months. This Tonic is a liquid exfoliant which introduces new skin to the surface, helping with the overall appearance of the skin. You can read more about the importance of SPF here
