Our Cacao Powder comes from the rare breed of Criollo cacao beans and Forastero Beans. It’s exactly the same as our Drinking Chocolate, making this natural cacao powder an ideal way to get your chocolate fix! Use it in desserts, drinks and even savoury dishes.

What do I Taste Like?
Ours is a natural cacao, rather than a processed dutch-style powder, which has had alkali added to it.

Lucy Bee Cacao has a richer, fuller, more traditional taste than those with added sugar.

Where am I From?

Lucy Bee Cacao is brought to you by a mainly female team of single mothers from the beautiful, mountainous ‘cacao belt’ in the Dominican Republic.  

Why Fair Trade?
Our Fair Trade contributions go towards a Copay fund set up by our producer. This will be used to help educate workers’ children and teach them English, to improve their future prospects. 


  1. What is the Difference Between Cacao and Cocoa Powder? 

In theory, the words ‘cacao’ and ‘cocoa’ should mean the same thing. In practice, though, ‘cacao’ tends to refer to the purest form of cacao/cocoa and ‘cocoa’ is generally used to mean those chocolate powders which have had sugar and possible fillers added. Our blog explains in more detail:

The cocoa beans used for Lucy Bee Cacao Powder/Drinking Chocolate are from the Dominican Republic.

  1. What is Cacao Powder Made of? 

Our Cacao Powder/Drinking Chocolate is made from a blend of the rare Criollo cacao bean and the forestero cacao bean. These are handpicked; fermented (a natural process, during which time they are turned regularly, to ensure each bean ferments at the same rate and the end flavour is uniform); spread onto wooden tables to dry; roasted (at temperatures below 45C); cooled, milled (turning the beans into a thick liquid called cacao liquor; pressed (to separate the cacao butter from the ‘cake’; the ‘cake’ is now dried and milled to a flour consistency, then sieved, ready to package as 100% Cacao Powder. 

  1. Is Cacao Powder Good for Your Skin? 

Lucy Bee Cacao Powder/Drinking Chocolate contains antioxidants and is naturally high in fibre, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and protein and is a good source of calcium. The skin can benefit from the properties of these.

  1. Is Cacao Powder Vegan? 

Lucy Bee Cacao Powder and Drinking Chocolate are both vegan certified.

  1. What are Cacao Nibs? 

Cacao nibs are dried and fermented bits of cacao beans, with a deep chocolate flavour. 

  1. How Much Caffeine in Cacao Powder? 

Cacao powder contains theobromine which has similar properties to caffeine but is a different chemical. Caffeine is not naturally in cacao powder.

  1. Is Your Cacao Powder/Drinking Chocolate Raw?

 The debate around ’raw cacao’ is an interesting one and somewhat confusing too!

There are a couple of points to consider. When talking about a ‘raw’ product, it is generally accepted that during the ‘processing’ of that product, the temperature does not go above 45C.

In the making of our cacao powder/drinking chocolate, the beans are fermented. Whilst the temperature should not go above 45C, because this is a natural process we are unable to guarantee that at no point during this, does the temperature go above 45C.

 Secondly, some would say that for cacao to be considered truly raw, it shouldn't be roasted either, yet, our producer advices that the beans need to be roasted otherwise they are too bitter. The beans used for our cacao / drinking chocolate are roasted with a maximum temperature of 45C. 

In light of these points mentioned and to avoid any confusion, we do not use the term ‘raw’ for our product.

This is a most rich tasting cacao ...full of body and flavour. Add it to cakes as part of dry ingredients ...a 'chocolate' flavour like no other ! Try it in flapjacks .... you will not turn back . I certainly will not turn back from Lucy Bee products. I love the ethos, the basic principles ..... and the amazing support with recipes and news.

Doesn't taste very nice in my opinion so rather disappointing. It's just bitter chocolate powder. Both me and my Mrs thought the same. It is all natural which is a plus but was expecting something delicious. Maybe try one of the other brands.

Personally didn't like the taste for drinking chocolate. Too bitter/not sweet enough and I'm a fan of dark chocolate. It was quite thick. Would probably be good for baking though instead of normal cocoa powder.

Makes a lovely hot chocolate. It is very rich so takes some getting used to, but is definitely better than mainstream brands that are full of sugar and don't have a strong chocolate taste.

I have bought a LOT of cacao powders over the years and this is the best one on the market, by far. This has got a rich, chocolatey taste and makes a wonderful healthy hot chocolate, with no need for sweetener. I also use it in smoothies, for baking and for making energy balls with nuts and dates. Delicious, my favourite cocoa powder! I like this so much more than the fully raw cacoa powders as this is so much more flavoursome. I use this regularly in drinks.


Such a great drink, have been having it evenings instead of coffee. The taste is not like a main stream hot chocolate which is very sweet and full of sugar this tastes more natural and as such takes a little time to adjust but in the long run far better for you, I started with a little maple syrup to sweeten it and now drink it raw and have even tried it mixed in a coffee which is well worth a try.

Bought to use as an alternative to hot chocolate...don't bother! It's awful, slightly bitter taste and not very chocolatey tasting. I know this is cacao and not hot chocolate but it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth so maybe I'll just try it in my protein bites instead.


love Lucy bee coconut oil. but this is horrible if u want a hot chocolate drink!! so bitter. be OK for baking. obviously it's ment to be like this as not full of sugar but come on!!
